Normandybb - Things To Do
Normandy is rich in history and has much to offer in the way of scenery ranging from magnificent, sandy beaches, through pretty flower bedecked villages to the rugged terrain of the Suisse Normande. There are many places to visit and activities to enjoy to suit all ages and tastes.
For those enjoying sightseeing Mont St Michel, recognised as a Marvel of the Western World, is a must and is a pleasant drive of about an hour. If feeling really energetic you can cycle the 63kms along the voie vertes one of which runs directly to the rear of our property, thus avoiding traffic altogether!
Other places of historic interest are Falaise(64km), birthplace of William the Conqueror, which houses his impressive castle, Bayeux(98km) with it's famed tapestry and fine cathedral, medieval Domfront(29km) and Coutances with yet another magnificent cathedral. If you wander off the beaten track a little you will discover other lesser known but interesting and beautifully designed abbeys and churches.
It would be difficult to imagine staying in Normandy without visiting the D-Day landing beaches which are just under an hour and a half's drive from Sourdeval. Whether you choose to explore the many museums, monuments and landmarks or reflect upon the terrible waste and devastation in the sombreness of the vast American Military Cemetery, you will be moved by the experience Arromanches-Les-Bains is worth a visit both for the Musée du Débarquement and the circular cinema and Caen's Le Mémorial has a wealth of innovative displays which provide a fascinating insight into contemporary history for all ages.
Children will enjoy a visit to the Village Enchanté at Bellefontaine just a few kms away whilst a little further afield is the miniature railway at Clécy and the zoos of Champrepus and Jurques. Fine sandy beaches may be enjoyed at Granville and the surrounding smaller unspoilt resorts.
If, however, you just want to spend a quiet, relaxing day, we would suggest driving to the charming "floral" village of St Fraimbault, stopping on the way to discover nearby Mortain's cascades or medieval Domfront's castle ruins and panoramic views After enjoying lunch on the terrace of the pleasant restaurant opposite the Mairée resplendant with floral displays you can, on the drive back, stop at the Fosse d'Arthur (supposedly the burial place of King Arthur but we have our doubts!) where you can walk lunch off with a gentle stroll round the lake. If all this sounds a bit tame there is bungee jumping locally!!
